This is Part 2 of our two part coverage of this film. If you haven't yet listened to part 1, you can find it here!
On Oct. 24, 2011, 12-year-old Garrett Phillips was murdered in his home in Potsdam, a small town in upstate New York. Police quickly zeroed in on a suspect in this unthinkable crime: Oral “Nick” Hillary, a black man in the mostly white community, who was a soccer coach at Clarkson University and the ex-boyfriend of Garrett’s mother, Tandy Cyrus. Hillary insists that he is innocent. There is no evidence of his guilt and he has an alibi. And so begins a 5-year battle for the truth.

The lack of evidence against Hillary is what makes this case so hard to sit with, especially when the investigation seemed to narrow so quickly. I also think the film does a good job showing how a small-town narrative can harden before the facts catch up. Seeing unrelated casino links like https://legacyofdeadslot.org/apps/, near a discussion this heavy feels jarring, but it also reminds me how easy it is for noise to crowd out the serious details. The alibi and the absence of physical evidence are definately the parts I keep coming back to.
